In the world of law enforcement training, few accomplishments carry the weight, history, and respect of becoming an ASP Trainer. To wear the black ASP Trainer shirt and earn the coveted Trainer Coin is not just a symbol of achievement—it’s a testament to relentless dedication, character, and the pursuit of excellence in officer safety. Those who have participated in ASP Trainer Certification (ATC) almost unanimously describe the experience as the most challenging and fulfilling training experience in which they have taken part. In this post, we’ll take a look at what it takes to get there.
The journey begins: AIC
The path to becoming an ASP Trainer starts with the ASP Instructor Certification (AIC) Course. This is a rigorous, three-day, tuition-free course designed to train professionals in the use of the expandable baton, handcuffs, and duty flashlight. Recently, ASP added an optional fourth day, featuring the new OC Instructor Course (OIC), further enhancing the breadth and realism of the training provided. Successful completion of the certifies and authorizes the officer to teach the basic skills at his or her agency or academy.
Throughout the AIC, instructors are not just learning—they are being evaluated. And in some cases, a student will display qualities that go beyond just competence. Qualities that show the potential to become a Trainer.
It’s by no means automatic or easy. An ATC recommendation from an existing trainer is earned only through consistent demonstration of:
Not everyone gets the nod
Many students attend multiple AICs before ever being considered for an ATC. Why? Because ASP does not accept mediocrity or shortcuts, or issue certificates for attendance. Rather, the company looks for individuals who are prepared to represent the brand—and its 50 year heritage—at the highest level. Who will train other instructors to teach the officers who serve our communities every day. Who will share ASP’s unrelenting commitment to Protecting Those Who Protect.
Nothing is more important to ASP.
The tryout: The ASP Trainer Certification (ATC)
ATC is held only once a year, and being invited is an honor—but it's also the most demanding law enforcement training experience you may ever face. ASP covers the entire cost of the training tuition and gear, candidates just need to get themselves there. ATC is a grueling 3-day trial, both physically and mentally. Candidates are pushed to their limits through scenario-based training, high-pressure teaching segments, and intense evaluations. It is dynamic, physical, even exhausting. It’s meant to be. ATC is a trial by fire from which only the best emerge successfully. In fact, there has never been an ATC where every candidate passed. At one ATC, no candidate passed.
That’s how high the standards are.
Why it matters
Earning the coin and the black shirt isn’t about ego or status—it’s about legacy, and more importantly, responsibility. Again, ASP Trainers are entrusted to train future instructors, who will return to their agencies and communities and teach skills that save lives. The better the Trainer, the better the Instructors. The better the Instructors, the safer the officers. The safer the officers, the safer the public.
It’s that simple—and that important.
Wearing the black shirt
Those who earn the right to wear the black ASP Trainer shirt don’t just represent themselves—they represent a heritage of excellence, global impact, and officer safety. It’s not a job. It’s a calling. It’s also an international brotherhood and sisterhood like none other. An amazing family of the most exceptional professionals in law enforcement. So if you’re on the path, keep pushing. Master your skills. Embrace the challenge. Seek mentorship. And above all—train like lives depend on it. Because they do.
